Description

 What is Korfball?

Korfball is a Dutch sport that combines the most exciting aspects of basketball, handball and netball into one!

It’s a mixed gender team sport – each team has 4 women and 4 men playing together on the court.

Most people join Korfball as beginners, so it’s worth having a go, especially if you want to try something new!

Training Sessions

We train four times a week, offering a mix of developmental, competitive and match‑focused sessions to support players of all levels. Preseason begins on 8 September, running in our usual training slots.

Our Tuesday morning session (6:30–7:30 am) is a developmental session aimed at building skills, confidence and game understanding. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wants extra practice.

Wednesday mornings (8–9 am) will become our BUCS squads’ training once trials have taken place and teams are announced. Until then, sessions will be open while we run GIAGs and welcome new players.

Friday evenings (6–7:30 pm) are open club training, suitable for everyone — whether you’re brand new or returning with experience.

Sunday evenings (7:30–9 pm) are also open club training, but are more match‑play focused, helping players prepare for competitive fixtures. Early in the year, these sessions may look slightly different as we run GIAGs and introduce newcomers to the sport.

For the 2026/27 season, our 1st Team will compete in SWKA 1, and our 2nd Team will compete in SWKA 2. These leagues run throughout the year and provide regular weekend fixtures for competitive members. We plan to enter both our 1st and 2nd teams into BUCS this year, after both our teams' successes in making it to the national level last year, and our 1st team achieving 1st place at Trophy.

We plan to focus on a strong 1st and 2nd team structure. A 3rd/development team may be added if we have a large number of players trialling and the capacity to support an additional squad.

Socials & Club Community

Our social side is one of the best parts of the club. Every week we run fun, welcoming socials that give everyone a chance to get to know each other off the court. Whether you’re new to Bristol, new to korfball, or just looking to meet people, our socials are a great way to feel part of the community.

Across the year, we host a mix of themed nights, casual meet‑ups and bigger events, from classics like Pub Golf and Capture the Korf to more relaxed evenings where everyone can unwind together. We also run a family system, pairing new members with returners to help you settle in quickly and always have someone to turn to.

Our summer and winter formals are a real highlight, bringing the whole club together to celebrate the end of term. They’re always full of good food, good vibes and plenty of korf love.

Memberships:

This year we will have two different types of memberships:

Social membership - £50 (Price from 25/26, TBC for 26/27)

This allows access to training sessions and social events

Competitive membership - £95 (Price from 25/26, TBC for 26/27 - paid in instalments between TB1 and TB2)

This allows access to training sessions, social events and competitive events.

Competitive members are required to pay £60 in TB1 for their membership and supplement this with an additional payment of £35 in TB2 if they remain on a team once retrials have taken place. Similarly, those who purchased social memberships in TB1 and join a team in TB2 will also be required to buy the competitive upgrade in TB2.*

We aim to keep membership costs to a minimum to keep korfball one of the cheapest competitive sports you can play at Bristol Uni.

Memberships don't need to be bought until after trials have taken place, but thereafter you will be required to attend any training sessions, socials, or competitive events. If you do not plan on trialling for a competitive team, then you are already able to purchase the social membership! (Although this is not yet required to attend sessions).

Members will also have to purchase an SEH access pass in order to access the sports hall facilities (£25 at the start of the academic year, paid through the SU website), which will automatically be added to your cart when you purchase a membership.

Members should also be aware of Bristol SU’s Activity Hardship Fund – a way in which you can receive aid when paying membership fees.

We understand that financial circumstances can vary, and we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be a part of our community. To support those who may be facing financial pressures, we are introducing a membership payment instalment plan. This option is designed to make it easier for individuals experiencing financial difficulty to manage their membership fee.

Please note that this instalment plan is intended primarily for members who are currently facing financial challenges. If you believe you could benefit from this arrangement, please email yc25491@bristol.ac.uk (Molly) to discuss the details and how we can best accommodate your needs.

*The membership costs stated are still TBC for the 26/27 year; however, we are aiming to keep costs similar to keep korfball accessible to everyone.

So why should you join?

Korfball is one of the most welcoming and friendly societies at Bristol Uni. No matter your skill level, we’re open to everyone, so why not come along and give it a go – we promise we won’t disappoint!

Give It a Go (GIAG)

Our GIAG sessions are the perfect chance to try korfball for the first time. You don’t need any experience!!  Come along, meet the club and give it a go. We’ll teach you the basics, run some shooting drills and play friendly matches so you can get a feel for the sport.

GIAGs are relaxed, beginner‑friendly and a great way to see what korfball is all about. They’re also one of the best opportunities to meet new people before the season properly begins.

We have a GIAG session will be on the 16th of September 2026 from 7-8 pm. You can sign up via our page on the Bristol SU site. This GIAG session will be held in the Indoor Sports Centre, on Tyndall Avenue (BS8 1TP). After this session, we will go straight into our first social of the year!

Preseason will start on the 8th of September, and all our training sessions will be very beginner-friendly in the first weeks while everyone settles in. We would love to see some new faces!

We’ll also be at the yearly Freshers’ Fair at stall 209, so come say hello if you have any questions or want to know more.

Sending you all Korf love and hope to see you soon! <3

To date, over £1.25m has been distributed. The Alumni Foundation is completely reliant upon the generosity of its donors in order to undertake its work.
