Recharge and Relax: Your Officers Tips to Tackle Exam Season

Monday 01-12-2025 - 09:14

Exam season is nearly here, and we know that for many students, coursework deadlines are looming. Long days in the library are on the horizon, but remember, being able to find the time to unwind and get out is so important!

This week, your full-time officers shared their top tips for taking a breather when the going gets tough. From relaxing coffee spots and favourite nature trails to cold water dips, they have got great ideas to help you recharge during those intense study sessions 📖

If things during this exam period start to feel overwhelming, remember support is always available

The University has has services in place to aid your wellbeing, and our Support Centre is here to offer guidance on everything from academic stress and miscounduct to personal wellbeing.

Here’s where your officers go to clear their minds and refresh their energy:

Katie, Union Affairs Officer

“Cotham hill is only a short walk from university and its home to my favourite coffee shop, 1B! My go to is a latte but hot chocolates are also nice this time of year! In the evening its always nice catching up on a series, currently I am enjoying Greys Anatomy expanding my STEM knowledge”

Linlu, Equality, Liberation & Access Officer

"My favourite way to unwind is to take a walk in any green space. It’s a bit chilly now, but I love taking a deep breath and feeling the crisp air fill my lungs."

Lucy, Student Living Officer

“In terms of favourite places to unwind, I really love going to the Goat's Gulley! It is up on the Downs and its especially nice with all of the autumn colours and a really good way to clear your head - also apparently the goats aren't owned by the council, but they're 'employed' by the council which is quite funny if it’s true. But remember, if exams get too stressful you can always drop out of uni and start a job as an SU officer ( just kidding 🐐)."

Ella, Sport & Student Development Officer

“I get myself moving by heading to Clevedon Marine Lake to for a cold-water dip and swim in the sea (yes, even in winter!).  There are nice cafes around for a hot drink afterwards, and lovely views over to Wales to enjoy. It's around a 25/30 min drive from Bristol, or you can get the bus, but it's worth it! Even with the cold!”

Mia, Undergraduate Education Officer

“I think my favourite place in Bristol to de-stress are the botanic gardens - they’re so peaceful and afterwards you can even do work there as they have a WiFi connection!”

Sharan, Postgraduate Education Officer

"Oddly enough, one of the best ways for me to de-stress is by... cleaning. I enjoy reorganising or redecorating my room, kitchen or any space. A tidy and re-energised environment feels so transformational for my motivation. I love that refreshing my environment always refreshes my mindset too!"

Jessie, International Students' Officer

“Uni can be so overwhelming sometimes, and my brain just goes 404 error! When that happens, I usually cook myself some comfort meal (Vegan Mac and Cheese, or Leek and Potato Soup!). And if I'm feeling it, making myself a hot choco is always the best! This helps me get back in the brain space to lock in!”

Taking time to relax shouldn’t be just a treat, it’s essential for doing your best work. So, take a leaf from your officers’ book, try out their top picks, to balance work with taking a break!
