Bristol SU to hold Referendum on NUS UK Membership in March

Sunday 25-01-2026 - 09:00

Every three years, Bristol students get to decide whether we stay affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS)

This is called a referendum, a vote open to all full members of Bristol SU. It’s part of our Bylaws and gives you the power to shape our connection with the NUS.

The question will be: Should Bristol SU be affiliated to the National Union of Students UK (NUS UK)?

Your vote will be a simple Yes or No answer to the question above, and you can cast your decision when voting in the Bristol SU Elections.

Want to get involved in the campaign?

Students will have the opportunity to become the leader of the Yes and No campaigns at the upcoming Annual Members’ Meeting on Thursday 19 February. You can find out more about running a campaign at our Candidate Academy session online and in person. Once they’ve been elected, you’ll be able to contact them to join the campaign team!

Voting will be open across the same period as the SU Elections; from 09:00 on Monday 9 March until 21:00 on Thursday 12 March.

You can find out more information about what NUS UK is, as well as updated information on the Yes and No campaign on our webpage

The Returning Officer

The Returning Officer for the referendum will be Sam Jones, Academic Quality Manager at the University of Bristol. The Returning Officer oversees the referendum process and makes sure it is conducted fairly and transparently. She will be supported by SU staff members who will remain impartial throughout the referendum process.

A committee of elected students who oversee Bristol SU’s democracy (Democratic Standards Committee) appointed the Returning Officer and made recommendations on the timeline, question and rules.

If you have any queries about the referendum, please email bristolsu-elections@bristol.ac.uk
