A Message from Bakhtawar this International Students Week

International Students Week is here, and with it, a lineup of exciting events that welcome all students to explore new cultures, make connections, and support our international peers.
Whats more, we also chatted with Bakhtawar, your Full-time International Students Officer, to learn more about her vision for the year ahead and her experiences that drive her passion!

An Introduction to International Students’ Week
International Students Week at Bristol SU is a week-long event that includes activities to help international students meet each other and your elected officer, Bakhtawar.
International Students Week is also a time to celebrate the incredible journey of students from all corners of the world who come to Bristol, bringing with them diverse perspectives, ambitions, and stories 📖
For the majority of International Students, their path to university requires leaving family, adjusting to new cultures, and navigating new challenges.
Bakhtawar, your International Students Officer shared some of these challenges;
“I came to the University of Bristol in October 2022 as an international Student. It was my first time travelling and my transition to life in the UK was not as smooth as I hoped. For starters, my visa was delayed by three weeks and then I faced issues trying to get accommodation! I also struggled to open a bank account and register with a GP, this was all on top of adjusting to life at University!”
After struggling to settle for several months, Bakhtawar noticed an advertisement for the Bristol SU election nominees.
“I felt it was the opportunity for me to make change happen to ensure that no international student goes through what I went through. My own experiences were my main driver of motivation to putting my name forward.”
“Since my election, the Bristol SU has helped me a lot in maximizing my potential as an Officer. I have come up with this vision for international students which emphasises creating an inclusive community at Bristol that celebrates diversity, and fosters cultural exchange.”
“It also includes tailored academic support, dedicated career development services, and accessible mental health resources, all aimed at helping international students thrive. It also encourages international students to participate in community activities and global initiatives, fostering a sense of belonging and contribution to society.”
“I believe that by implementing these elements, the University of Bristol can create a vibrant, supportive environment that empowers international students to thrive both academically and personally.”
Also, part of Bakhtawar’s mission has been to highlight the benefits of taking part in the International Students Week activities, offered by Bristol SU.

International Students Week is a fantastic opportunity for the community to celebrate diversity and foster connections between international and home students. It promotes cultural understanding and encourages collaboration, making our Bristol community richer and more inclusive.
It is also a week that acknowledges and celebrates the positive contributions of international students not just to the University but to the wider City of Bristol. Each year we have hundreds of international students who give more than a thousand hours volunteering for various charities across the city. So, this week is celebrated to acknowledge all international students!
When asked what event she was most looking forward to about the week ahead, Bakhtawar said; “This year I am particularly excited about the Global Food Fair. I secured funding for the Fair from the University so it could be a free event for all students. So far, we have more than 20 societies sign up for it. Each year, it is attended by more than 200 students. What I love about the Global Food Fair is how it bridges the cultural gaps. Everyone comes together and shares a meal with each other. The vibes of the event are so wholesome. It really excites me!”
