Bristol SU recognises that the costs of participating in student groups can be prohibitively expensive for some students. The Activity Hardship Fund was created to support those students who wouldn't otherwise be able to participate in their chosen activity due to the cost.
As one of the largest and most dynamic societies at the University of Bristol, we offer an exciting, inclusive, and award-winning a cappella experience. With 9 diverse groups under our umbrella, whether you’re passionate about singing, beatboxing, or stage choreography, whether you're into pop music, folk music, rock ' n ' roll, or jazz, whether you want to sing leisurely, or if you want to compete across the UK... There is something for everyone! Even if you're not interested in performing or singing, but up to our socials, whether it's formal events, pub crawls or quizzes, scavenger hunts, family scheme potlucks or just a simple night out... You name it! We have it! But... why us?
We provide:
🏆 Award-Winning Excellence – We were voted for Best Society at the Bristol SU Awards in 2017, 2018, and 2023, and have achieved full gold accreditation with Bristol SU since 2020. We’re proud to represent Bristol as one of the UK’s leading a cappella communities.
🎤 Unforgettable Performances – Our groups stage multiple concerts each year and compete nationwide, showcasing Bristol’s vibrant a cappella scene. We also host Best of the South West (BOSW), the region’s premier a cappella event, which won *Best Event 2018/19* and was shortlisted again in 2023.
🎶 One of a kind university experience – Whether you thrive in a large chorus, a tight-knit quartet, or something in between, we have a group for you. Check out our groups to discover where you fit—or let us help you start your own!
Every one of the nine groups within our society has its own distinct characteristics and focus areas. With such diversity, the simplest—and most effective—way to categorise them is by asking one key question: Are they an auditioned group or not?
Out of the 9 groups, 5 of them are unauditioned. This includes Bristones, Topnote, Brizzlebox, Tonerangers, and Wontones. Everyone can join these groups, whether you're new to singing or a veteran. Moreover, the ability to read music is not a requirement (we have audio recordings of the arrangements provided), although mastering it will enhance your overall a cappella experience. Lastly, there is no need to sign up to join these groups, just swing by our rehearsals and start singing!
As such, to join the remaining four groups: Bristol Suspensions, Academy, Pitch Fight, and All Sharps, you will have to participate in an audition process. For more information about auditions, please keep an eye out for our Instagram page announcement, or visit our external page about auditioning here.
