Housing Fair

Are you a first-year student preparing to transition from university accommodation to private rental housing? Or are you already living in private accommodation but looking for a better place next year? 🏡

University of Bristol and Bristol SU have collaborated to bring you a Housing Fair designed to equip you with the knowledge and resources you need to make informed decisions about your housing options - including knowing your renting rights and key things to be aware of when you're renting a new home.

At the fair, you will be able to talk to accomodation providers, charities, University services and Bristol SU Lettings - there will also be spin-to-win prizes up for grabs from plant giveaways to cupcakes! 🪴🧁

There will be rolling talks throughout the day; these include a "Know Your Renting Rights" quiz hosted by Shelter and a "Finding Your New Home" session from the University of Bristol.

Why Attend?

  • Explore Housing Options: Get detailed information on the various accommodation options available to you as a student.

  • Make Informed Decisions: Learn about the rental process, including what to look for in a rental property and tenant rights.

  • Meet Housing Providers: Interact with accommodation providers and agencies, and get your questions answered directly by experts in the field.
  • Plan Ahead: Gain valuable insights into how to navigate the housing market, secure a rental that fits your needs, and avoid common pitfalls.
  • Connect with Peers: Meet other students who are also searching for housing, and perhaps even find potential housemates for the upcoming year.
  • Find out about your renting rights: Find out about basic rights you have when you’re renting, where you can get advice on housing, and local activities you can get involved with to campaign for better rights.

Who Should Attend?

While this event is primarily aimed at first-year students transitioning to private rental accommodation for their second year, all students are welcome. Whether you’re looking for your first rental, seeking better accommodation for next year or want to find out key information about your housing rights, this session is for you.

Important Information

  • U Cards: Please bring your U Card to scan on entry. This will allow us to send you a feedback form after the event, ensuring we continue to meet your needs in future sessions.

Your Experience

  • For First-Year Students: This session is tailored to help you understand the housing process, reduce the stress of finding accommodation, and assist you in finding housemates for the next academic year.

  • For Students in Private Accommodation: If you’re already renting but looking for a change, this event will help you explore your options for a better living situation.

  • For Students Who Want Advice: If you're unsure on your rights as a renter, organisations like Shelter may be able to answer your questions.

Talk Summaries

Know your renting rights quiz (hosted by Shelter)

Not sure what rights you have as a renter? Come along to this session to find out where you stand when it comes to tenancies, repairs and rent. You’ll also get an information pack on where to go for advice, and how you can join the local, renter-led Bristol Fair Renting Campaign.

Finding your next home

Come along and hear about things to think about when looking for your next home – where to live, when to start looking, what to look for when viewing a property, what bills you need to budget for and expectations when it comes to living in a shared house.
