Annual Members Meeting (AMM)
It's the biggest democratic event of the year... the Annual Members’ Meeting!
This is the biggest event in the democracy calendar, each year bringing together hundreds of Bristol students, to debate and decide Bristol SU policy for the next three years.
The debate can get pretty heated - and not just from the fumes of hundreds of free pizzas. Year on year, AMM sees impassioned debates on a range of issues affecting students. Remember you can vote in the priority ballot to make sure the motion you care about most gets talked about at the meeting.

- ALL STUDENTS can attend and vote at the meeting.
- ANY STUDENT can submit a motion or item for discussion.

How Does AMM Work?
Annual Members Meeting (AMM) is a chance for you to get your voice heard directly and help set the agenda of your Students Union. You can help submit your student ideas as motions which get debated by any student as well as renew Union policy that’s about to expire. It is your student space where no matter who you are you get to have a say on what the SU cares about.
How do motions come into existence?
A student will have a new idea on how to better their SU. They then meet with the Liberation & Campaigns Team, to help shape this into a motion. Sometimes students will be ahead of the curb and have a fully fledged motion ready to submit!

What happens with motions once approved?
Motions get sent to Democratic Standards Committee, to be approved for debate. They’ll make sure it’s appropriate to go to AMM and approve it. The students will be notified and briefed on having to propose a motion by the SU staff team.
How the debate is structured
- Motion proposer gives a 3 minute speech for their motion
- The audience has a chance to ask practical questions on the content of the motion. This is not a chance to debate the validity of the motion: it is strictly a space for you to clarify on the contents of the motion. There will be a QR code on the screen to access Mentimeter and ask your questions.
- You will have two minutes to submit your questions.
- If you want to make a statement For or Against a motion, please also use this time to make your way to the front rows. Sit on the For side if you wish to make a statement in support of the motion, and on the Against side if you wish to make a statement opposing the motion.
- The Chair will read out a maximum of 6 questions to the proposer, who will have a chance to answer.
- The Chair will call for a speech against the motion. They will have 3 minutes for their speech.
- If no one wishes to speak against the motion, we will move directly to voting. If someone does, the Speech Against concludes the first round of debate and kicks off the floor debate.
- The Chair will call on the first person in the queue in the For side to come give their 1 minute statement
- The Chair will call on the first person in the queue in the Against side to come give their 1 minute statement
- Rinse and Repeat until everyone has spoken, or, if the debate seems to keep going, until the Chair calls for a second round of 3 minute speeches, which will conclude the debate.
- The Chair will call for a vote. You will vote by raising your voting card.
Why it is important to debate?
Imagine if the SU suddenly decided it was against their practice to ever support the football on, or to never host events past the month of March. It would feel pretty unfair, right? Debate is designed as a chance to hear from everyone – so we can carry on being a Union for all Students!

General Terms and Conditions
- Bristol SU operates ticket purchasing for multiple events at venues across the city. These terms and conditions only apply where they are not superseded by an event promoter or a particular venue’s terms and conditions.
- We don't sell tickets through secondary ticket sites. Sometimes tickets are sold through partners, but this will be stated. A ticket purchased from secondary ticket sites or from ticket touts will not be valid, and Bristol SU accepts no liability for refunds.
- Admission to all events is subject to the restrictions employed by the host venue.
- Students must bring their University of Bristol UCard to every event they wish to attend for identification purposes. For members of the public, photo ID will be required (e.g., passport, driving licence, proof of age card).
- Re-admission is not typically allowed once you have attended an event, unless approved by the manager on duty. There are some events where re-admission is allowed, e.g., the Welcome Fair, but this will be stated on the specific event information.
- Right of admission is reserved by the venue management, and their decision is final. We have a zero-tolerance policy on Racism, Sexism, Ageism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Ableism, or any other form of discrimination. Harassment, aggression, or intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated.
- Your UCard is not transferrable – you cannot lend it to anyone else to get into the venue.
- Every effort will be made to allow priority queuing at all events – however, this cannot be guaranteed.
- All events are restricted to AGE 18+ unless specifically noted on the event page. All guests are required to provide proof of age if asked by the door staff, and entry can be refused without it. Bristol students who forget their UCard will also need proof of age.
- We may use the email address you provide when purchasing tickets to give you updates about your purchase, event details, or request feedback after the event.
Refunds
*** Please note that this is standard practice at every entertainments venue in the UK. *** ALL TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERRABLE. All sales are final. Refunds are not available on tickets once purchased, including those bought in error or in cases of illness or injury. However, refunds may be given in the following cases:
- The entire event is cancelled by the promoter or Bristol SU. Refunds are available to everyone who has purchased a ticket in advance.
- The event is postponed to another date which the ticket holder cannot attend. The ticket holder must opt in to a refund within 7 days of notification or before the event date, whichever is sooner.
- The main performing artist has cancelled or the event is significantly altered for reasons beyond our control, but the event still took place. Refunds will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
- The event has sold out, and there is a waiting list. In this instance, refunds may be given and the tickets resold to people on the waiting list.
In all instances, the duty manager’s decision will be final.
Transfer Policy
- All tickets for Bristol SU events are non-transferrable and are assigned exclusively to your account.
- You may send your ticket to a trusted friend to use on your behalf. Our systems detect duplicate tickets, so only send your ticket to one person to avoid them being turned away.
- Do not buy from secondary ticket outlets, as it is usually a scam.
Physical Ticket Replacements
- For events with physical tickets, it is the responsibility of the individual purchaser to keep their ticket safe once collected. Replacement tickets will not be issued in the event of loss or damage, and will need to be repurchased.
- It is advised to write your name and University number on the back of your ticket so it can be returned if found.
Filming, Photography and Broadcast
- During events, the SU may broadcast live, take photographs, or record videos to be used for SU marketing and editorial purposes. Media may appear on the SU website, social media, and other publications.
- If you have concerns about appearing in photographs, film, or live broadcasts, please contact bristolsu-marketing@bristol.ac.uk in advance, and we will do our best to comply with your wishes.
Accessibility
- The Richmond Building and Senate House are fully wheelchair accessible.
- During busy times, such as Welcome Week, quiet or sensory rooms are available. Please see signs at the venue or ask a member of staff.
- Staff can be identified by their light blue t-shirts if you need any support at an event.
- Some events may use smoke machines, strobe lights, or other special effects.
Covid-19
- You should not attend events if you have tested positive for COVID-19 or are feeling unwell.
