Ten Items you Don’t Want to Forget: Fresher's Essentials

Monday 02-09-2024 - 09:00

It’s easier than you think to forget the essentials when you’re starting university for the first time. Whether it’s your bedding, your food – or even your laptop or clothes, it’s better to be prepared!

Why not take a look at our list of ten items you don’t want to forget for some inspiration?

1. Bedding 🛌

After the madness of starting university, exploring what may be a new city, and learning loads of new information for your course there’s one thing that you’re going to want to make sure is calm – your bedroom and the all-important bed!

Bringing your bedding ensures that you’ll be comfortable and get some much-needed rest from day one. Having your own duvet, pillows and cushions, and sheets will make your space feel more like home.

And a top tip, bringing spare bedding means you don’t have to worry about how quickly you can wash and dry it!

2. Important Documents 📃

Maybe it’s the first thing you’ll think of, but important documents are one to double-check before you leave for university as it may be a difficult start if you forget them:

  • Your photo ID (driving licence, passport etc)
  • NHS number so you can register at a local medical centre
  • Any finance documents you need for setting up/checking your student bank account.

3. Laptop and Chargers 💻

Your laptop will be your lifeline for lecture notes, assignments, and staying connected with friends and family. Make sure to pack any necessary chargers or adapters. Having reliable tech from the start will keep you ahead of the game academically and socially.

4. Kitchen Essentials 🍽️

Even if you’re not a master chef, basic kitchen items like a saucepan, frying pan, utensils, and a few plates and bowls are crucial.

Cooking your meals will save money and help you settle into a routine. Take a look at our packing list to see what kitchen essentials you might need to think about bringing.

5. Extension Cord 🔌

In student accommodation, power sockets might not be as conveniently placed as you’d like. An extension cord allows you to plug in all your devices without the hassle of moving furniture or sitting on the floor. Your degree might rely on electronics so it’s better to be able to charge them all, as well as home comforts like fair lights and lamps.

6. Clothing for All Occasions 👖

The British weather, especially in Bristol, is unpredictable, so pack layers. Bring a good mix of casual clothes, something for nights out, and a few smarter outfits for formal events or job interviews. And don’t forget a waterproof jacket—Bristol’s rain is no joke!

7. Medication and Toiletries 💊

Don’t rely on local shops to have your preferred brands of medication or toiletries, especially during Welcome Week. Bring enough prescription medication to last until you’ve registered with a local GP and stock up on basics like shampoo, toothpaste, and painkillers!

8. Washing Bag and Detergent 🗑️

It’s easy to overlook washing supplies, but they’re essential. A washing/laundry bag or basket will make trips to the washing machines easier, and having your detergent will ensure you can keep your clothes fresh from the start.

9. Notebooks and Stationery 📝

While you’ll likely do a lot of work on your laptop, having physical notebooks, pens, and other stationery will help you stay organised and take notes during lectures. Plus, jotting things down can be a great way to process new information.

10. A Touch of Home🏠

Lastly, bring something that reminds you of home—whether it’s a favourite photo or your favourite mug. University life is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming at first. Having something familiar around can provide comfort!
