Student Volunteering Week starts from Monday 10 until Saturday 15 February in collaboration with the Bristol PLUS Award and the Careers Service. This is the perfect opportunity to find out how you can act and support a wide range of volunteering projects across Bristol.
“Volunteering whilst at Uni is a wonderful way to make friends who might not necessarily be on your course or in your accommodation, but who share a same sense of purpose with you.”
Mia volunteers alongside her role at the SU with the charity JustLikeUs. By going into schools and talking to students about LGBTQ+ inclusivity, her work help builds community in the local area.
At Bristol SU we believe there's a volunteering role to suit everyone. How about gardening in Cotham Green, helping at a local charity shop or even getting creative at a local care home?
Or maybe take some inspiration from our International Students Officer Bak, who volunteered at LinkAges while at University, a program aimed at helping elderly people navigate technology.
Volunteering has always been deeply rewarding for me, teaching me the value of selflessly contributing to society without expecting anything in return. These experiences have shaped my leadership approach, fostering a more empathetic style and a strong commitment to driving change.
Throughout the week, Bristol SU is also offering a variety of events, talks and unique workshops for you to get stuck into. Emily, who is the Student Volunteering and Skills Coordinator here at Bristol SU has organised on a lot of these events for students and she beleives;
"Volunteering is a powerful tool that can be used to broaden your experience at university, whether you're interested in supporting an important cause, gaining new skills or building a sense of belonging. When I was a student, volunteering at a Foodbank helped me to get outside of my student bubble and learn about the experiences and issues faced by people living in the wider areas of the city."
Volunteering is also a great way to gain experience to develop your career. Gurvin your Postgraduate Education Officer graduated with an MA in Human Rights Law and volunteered at the Law Clinic alongside her studies.
“Volunteering at the Law Clinic has allowed me to learn vital skills such as drafting legal advice, working with a case partner and conducting client meetings that will be essential to my future career. Moreover, the law clinic has allowed me to engage with communities in. Bristol and to give back to those in the South West.”
