UoBBC is a thriving, vibrant and flagship club within Bristol Sport, winning #WeAreBristol Club of the Year in 2020-21. We provide all of our members the opportunity to play all levels of badminton, from high-performance competitive to recreational in one of Bristol's friendliest sports clubs! You'll be welcomed into the club and make great friends no matter your ability, so get in contact and come play!
Currently the club has over 400 members, a professional coach and a range of student volunteer coaches from our club-funded coaching qualification scheme, making us the largest indoor sports club at the university. We are also proud to be among the University's Performance Sports, giving us access to prime-time training slots and specialised Strength and Conditioning sessions. We have 5 teams competing in BUCS: W1 in the Premiership and M1 in Division 1, W2 in Western 1A , M2 and M3 in Western 2 as well as doubles, mixed and singles teams in the Avon Local League. The club also has strong links with the county team and local badminton community, with some members playing for Avon county squads. We host four Badminton England tournaments annually: three in Summer and one around Christmas; these are a great opportunity for current members to compete and prospective students to check us out!
It doesn’t stop there! Off-court the opportunities and community atmosphere continues, with our wide range of socials organised by our brilliant Social Secs. We host yearly Winter and Summer formals where all the stops are pulled out to make it a night to remember, but also with more casual socials ranging from big nights out, a family scheme league, alcohol-free socials, awards nights, trips and spectating professional badminton. We even cover ourselves with glow-in-the-dark paint for a solid 10-hour overnight UV badminton session to raise money for charity!
If you are interested in joining or have any questions please contact us via email or on our social media.
We offer three levels of membership to cater for all abilities. All of our sessions take place at the Indoor Sports Centre on Tyndall Avenue, right at the heart of campus (with a few in Kingsdown Sports Centre). For details on training times for this year, please visit our website.
These sessions are open to everyone and are a great way to get involved with badminton. Friendly matches and games are played throughout this session and are put on according to standard so no need to worry if you have never picked up a racket before or have played for many years, you won't be alone! Social members will also benefit from student coaches to improve technical ability; an excellent opportunity for players looking to improve their badminton.
The Development Squad offers a more competitive string of badminton with more regular training sessions including: coaching, match practice and competing in four competitive local league teams (Men's, Women's, Mixed and Singles teams in Bristol Leagues). Selection is based on trials: contact us or visit our stall at welcome fair to play in the trails.
The Performance squad is a select group of competitive players at club, county and international standard who play in BUCS competitions against other universities, making up three Men's teams and two Women's teams. This squad trains the most per week with a professional coach. The Performance Squad also have specialised Strength and Conditioning training during pre-season and the summer.
