Parties and Noise

Thankfully, it’s not illegal to have a party. But there are some things to bear in mind if you’re planning one.

Holding a big event, charging money for entry or for alcohol may breach licensing laws. The penalties for this can be severe: six months’ imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £20,000.

If anyone is dealing drugs in your house and you know about it, you can be prosecuted for permitting that to take place (section 8(b) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971). The punishment for this depends on the drugs involved, but can include up to 14 years’ imprisonment.

If you make too much noise, your neighbours may call in environmental health officers. These officers have the power to confiscate any musical equipment and to fine you.
